He loves his bumbo chair now that he can sit up and have some control of holding his head up. Looking around is a different story altogether though, haha!

Tummy Time, Temper Tantrums and Swings
Here are some pictures and video of Derek taken in the past week and a half. I can't believe my little boy will be three months in a week! WOW!
Derek threw a temper tantrum just today and we caught the tail end of it. This was after I tried a good long while to comfort him - Mitch did it within 20 seconds.
These are pictures of Derek in his swing. He LOVES it! Especially when I pop a movie in (most often Kung Fu Panda - that's his favorite) and then I get to have my hands free for a half hour until he wants to go to sleep.

He makes his happy baby dinosaur noise between 00:25 and 00:27
Happy in his swing; sorry the angle stinks, but I thought it was still too cute ;)

Nature Documentaries and Baby Police
Have you ever been watching a predator hunt its prey on the nature documentaries? Depending on what the focus of the documentary is, you end up rooting either for the predator or the prey... I usually root for the predator anyway, they eat less. Today, I found myself sympathizing with the prey for once.
"Go otter, go! Get the fish! Get the fish!.... *otter bites off the tail of the fish* Glad I'm not that fish."
Today, I feel like the fish. I realized today that I actually have to ask Derek for permission to do just about anything..
Can mommy swaddle you for a nap? Can mommy get up really quick to get a drink? Can mommy take a shower? Pretty soon, it's going to be "Can mommy take a nap?" And I hate when the answer is no...
I pretty much cursed myself with the last post - Derek no longer sleeps through the night. He wakes up about every 2-4 hours now. GAH! I pin it down to one of two things (or possibly a bit of both): 1) I had to hold/rock him to sleep Sunday in Relief Society because we were kicked out of Relief Society (I'll come back to that in a bit) or 2) I tried to put him on some semblance of a schedule on Monday. Monday morning, I made Derek wait til 7 am to feed him. Since he woke up at 6:30 and I needed to clean the bottles out anyway, I didn't feel too bad about this. Then, we played until 8:30 when he went down for a nap. Close enough to 9, an extra half hour sleep won't hurt. Woke him up at 11 to feed him and knew I had messed up royally when his eyes snapped open before I even bent over the crib. Uh-oh. Six hours later, after I dump half of dinner down the sink trying to drain it with a screaming child in his bumbo chair three feet away, I place a phone call to Mitch that goes something like this...
"You need to come home now *bloodcurdling screams from Derek in the background*"
"I'm on my way."
Thank heaven that I was able to escape with my former roommate, Milla, to a fun pottery painting place in Orem called Color Me Mine. I'm addicted to painting pottery and it was so much fun to hang out with Milla after not seeing her for several weeks. Mitch requested a mug that said "World's Greatest Dad," and I made a green and maroon bowl and a messed up ring holder... all for just over $20. I love that place. I'll post pictures of the finished products when I pick them up on Saturday.
Derek is cute though...
You know, visiting teaching is an amazing thing. You don't just teach a message but all kinds of lessons pop up. I have realized that, even as a psychology major, I can't do my own therapy. However, just knowing that someone knows I had a bad day, or calls to say hi, or drops off a load of pumpkin bread outside my door is worth hours of therapy. Instant smile and warm fuzzies that last through the day. Plus, one of my teachee's gave me a couple great pieces of advice yesterday: even if you only get the minimum goals done for the day, you still got goals done. And you aren't a bad mother - so stop telling yourself that. Derek still smiles and laughs when he wakes up, he's gaining weight and growing. I'm doing ok.
So, visiting teaching leads to thoughts of Relief Society which leads me back to the story I hinted at earlier: being kicked out of Relief Society. Derek had been fussing, so I naturally got up and went out into the hall to quiet him. He wanted to be held standing up so, since he was quiet now, I leaned against the door frame to listen to the lesson. Don't get me wrong, I love Relief Society and I think our presidency is amazing, but I get really mad when people think you have to be able to hear a pin drop during the lesson. Maybe it's because our ward is more newlywed than parents now, but man it ticks me off. Because another baby was fussing DOWN THE HALL, the door had to be closed on our lesson. Great. So I can't even listen to the lesson and it was a really good one about Adam and Eve (one of my favorite parts of the scriptures). I might as well go home and put my baby down for a nap. This is the third Sunday in a row. Thankfully, one of the counselors had the wonderful idea to open the overflow rubber curtains and let us (yes, not just me) care for our babies where the people on the first row couldn't turn around every time a baby cries, burps or, heaven forbid, they fart. Really loud. What are you, the baby police? Oh, he's farted twice now, he needs to be taken out. She's been crying 10 seconds, take her out. Gah.
OK, done with that vent. Whew. I feel a lot better now. Writing is my favorite kind of therapy because I don't have to pay someone else absurd amounts of money to listen to me talk. Though I wouldn't mind if people paid me absurd amounts of money to listen to them. Funny how that works, isn't it? Anyway, that said, don't feel obligated to read every word I write.

New Post!!
So, I've been a slacker when it comes to posting, but Derek is napping, so I figured I'd spend some quality time with my computer.
Derek has figured out that movies are fun. Uh-oh. I've been watching documentaries and some TV series while I feed him because it takes about an hour when all is said and done. It's been a nice time for me to enjoy myself and it happens every four hours - haha. Last night Derek was fussing and fussing and I just decided to plop myself into the glider and see if I couldn't just rock him to sleep and then put him down. I know, I know: be careful what habits I get him into, but I was at the end of my rope. Sue me. Anyway, I turned on a movie and Derek calmed down within 30 seconds. Amazing! So, we've limited him to movies during feeding time and tummy time. He suddenly somewhat likes tummy time - sort of. He still cries a lot when I put him on the pillow but at least he distracts himself a little bit with the movie.
We've ended up with a little extra money and decided to get some of the things that we probably wouldn't be able to get in Del Rio - like a headboard for the bed (with lots of storage) and some wall decor for our room (African theme) and Derek's room (baby animals). I have a friend whose husband is stationed in Del Rio right now and she's given me lots of awesome info about what we're getting in to. ;) There is almost NO shopping there: Walmart, Bealls and JC Penny. That's it. Since Derek's formula is only at Target, this means we get to stock up before we go, take a trip to San Antonio, or switch formulas. Hopefully we can find one that works as well for him as this one does and is as cheap.
Can I just say I like reruns? I've had Kung Fu Panda playing continuously since I fed Derek this morning - I'm on round 3. Of course, I'm not just sitting and watching though. It's nice to have background sound that doesn't disturb Derek. I try not to go into the bedroom when he's napping so I've been cleaning the living room, bathroom and kitchen.
Last week was great! Derek started sleeping through the night (YAY!) and I have started to figure out how to manage school, baby, cooking, Mitch AND find some time for me to play every day. I'm feeling so much better (mostly because I'm rested) and so much happier. Don't get me wrong, I love Derek and I'm so glad he's part of our family, but being a mom is tough! For every minute of rewarding smiles and giggles, there is at least an hour of wanting to pull my hair out. I have totally learned the value of a good night's rest though. I'm a lot more patient and happy when I'm rested, lol. Here are a couple pictures of Derek in his St. Patty's Day outfit that Gamm sent. So cute!

Derek's 2-Month Well-Baby Checkup
Derek had his 2-month well baby exam yesterday. He is now 11 lbs 4 oz and 22 inches long. His height-to-weight ratio went from the 2nd percentile to the 73rd percentile. WOO! His height percentile went to 18%, weight went up to 41%, and head circumferences went down to 12%. :S He's still growing though, so we'll see if his head catches up. Mitch has a small-ish head for his size though, so it might be normal.
He got his two month shots last week and was a total champ! He loved the oral vaccine and turned his head looking around for more after he finished it, plus he wasn't hardly fussy at all after the three shots. Excellent experience.

Derek's Baby Blessing
We blessed Derek in church today. What a beautiful blessing! I'm so thankful that I married a worthy priesthood holder. Derek was great and didn't start crying until the very end. My dad, TexAnne and Denise were able to make it up for the blessing but didn't stay long. Miss them already. Our friends from ROTC, Ben Larsen and his wife, Annastasha came! We were so glad to see them come over for Derek's special day. Of course, Mitchell's siblings were present (his brothers helped bless Derek) and Tammy's mom (Cloverne) and sister (Kathy) came. Aunt Kathy brought Katie, one of her daughters. She's so cute! We only stayed for sacrament and then we all went over to Grandma Allred's house for a brunch. What a freaking nightmare! I couldn't get the chicken broccoli casserole made fast enough and felt bad that everyone was waiting and hungry. It was a great get-together though. Thank you so much to everyone who made this day so very special!
I love how everyone is jostling for position
Everyone say, "Family!!"
Missing a set of grandparents, but so glad Jeff, Tammy, my dad and step-mom could make it out!
Finger-sucker already :)
I think he was getting a little cold

Results of Dr's Appointment
Derek had his 2 week well-baby appointment today. He's finally back to birth weight exactly at 7 lbs 9.5 oz, he grew one inch putting him at 21 inches and his head circumference is 35.5 cm. As far as percentiles, he's not very high up there at all: weight is 15th percentile, head circumference is 14th percentile but height is 49th percentile. He checked out as healthy though, which is all I really cared about. Dr Fairbanks did suggest that we switch formula brands because of Derek's gas, so we'll see how that goes. It looks like we're going to have to go entirely on formula pretty soon, so I hope we find one that agrees with him soon. :(
Since Mitch drove us to the appointment (and stayed, too), we went with him to the Det so he could have his meeting with Capt. Roper. Derek met some of the ROTC cadets and we had fun hanging out.
We are slowly starting to get back into society having friends over and being social. :) It's great! I missed being social. Mitch promises that I can go to sacrament meeting this Sunday and then we'll bless Derek the Sunday after and be fully integrated back in. :D YAY! I hope I'm up for all three hours, but we'll see. When we bless him on the 7th, we probably won't stay for the whole three hour block but will leave after sacrament and have a luncheon at Grandma's at 1 pm.
I am so excited for this summer's trip to Tennessee!! It sounds like so much fun! And then we move away from Provo and begin our life in the Air Force! This is going to be the best summer ever!! :D

Derek Video
Mitchell likes to blow raspberries on Derek's tummy and we get a kick out of his reaction every time...
