Independence Day Family Get-Together

We had an awesome family get-together today! I love it when all the cousins, aunts and uncles get together to spend time and hang out. Bamaw had a great idea to put two slip-n-slides end to end and the kids LOVED it! Austin made a now-famous layered trifle, Mitchell is becoming a serious grill master and grilled a bunch of chicken legs, hot dogs and an amazing pork loin. I broiled some delicious pineapple with a butter/brown sugar/cinnamon glaze. Ah-mazing! Liz's sister, Rebekah, was in town visiting them and came over to hang out too. It was fun to catch up with her and hear about her recent trip to Houston and San Antonio with Isaac and Katelyn. Such a fun family day!

Hahaha, I thought this was hilarious!

Uncle Austin made two of these!

This was seriously good pork! So moist!

This is seriously so good, oh my word!

 Catch it!

Liz and Austin took their youngest kids home to pack and get ready for their early morning departure to Washington tomorrow. We persuaded them to leave Isaac behind while the rest of the adults played the card game "Oh Heck."

Baby Makenzie! Mitchell is especially smitten. She's so calm.

Sweet smiles!

Fireworks in McKinney

We put Heidi down for bed and snuck the older three out to go find fireworks. Independence Day is Mitchell's favorite holiday and we haven't been out to see fireworks (intentionally) in years, so it was definitely about time for him to get his fix. We weren't close enough to feel the boom, so we'll put that on the list for next year, but we saw some pretty colors, we didn't have to fight for a parking spot, there's a huge grassy spot for the kids to run (wish I had prepared for that!), and it only took 8 minutes to get out of the parking spot and head home! Huge win in my book! We brought big stuffie pillows for the kids and laid the backseat down so they could relax and watch their movie of choice (Bambi, which was scratched, so we popped in the How to Train Your Dragon TV series). The kids were thrilled when we gave them a giant bowl of popcorn and M&Ms. Score! Mitchell and I sat on the fold up rocking chairs in the humid heat of a Texas summer evening and read our books in peace and quiet. Ahhhh... perfection.  Thank heaven for the dedicated men (and behind-the-scenes women) who fought (and those who fight today) for our freedoms that we take for granted so often. America is truly a blessed land!

 Love these sweet faces!

 Plushie padded perfection

Dressed for comfort and loving our time together!

My current read: Emma by Jane Austen. Love her!

When fireworks started, we opened the trunk and the kids settled in to watch

Derek is showing some pretty awesome talent as a photographer! He took most of the firework pics.
